BETHEL ASSOCIATE AD BRAD CHAPPELL PRESENTS GARRY MASON CLUB COACH OF THE YEAR

MCKENZIE, Tenn. –In past years student-athletes and coaches have been honored in the Annual Undergraduate Academic Awards Ceremony held on the campus of Bethel University. As the result of COVID-19 the ceremony has been replaced this year with Associate Athletic Director Brad Chappell conducting the awards with Virtual Award presentations.

Bethel Bass Coach Garry Mason was named the club coach of the year. It marks the third time Mason has captured the award.

2019-20 Accompliments

  • The Bethel Bass Cats won the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship in early August. Carter McNeil and Cole Floyd came from behind to win the title in Dayton, Tennessee.
  • The Wildcats sent a record four anglers to the prestigious Bassmasters Classic Bracket in late August. The event was held in Spring City, Tennessee.  Only the top eight anglers from Bassmasters gets to compete in this championship tournament.  It was only the second time in the history of the Classic Bracket series one program has had four out of the eight anglers competing from the same school.  Bethel University is the only college to hold that achievement. Cody Huff won the event. He edged out teammate Carter McNeil.
  • Floyd & McNeil won the Ranger Cup University Challenge in San Antonio in January.  The Ranger Cup University Challenge is one of the most prestigious contingency programs in college fishing.  All year long, Ranger Cup University anglers compete on the college circuit for the chance to earn an opportunity to participate in the all-expense-paid, made for TV event.  The 2019 qualifiers were Adam Puckett & Blake Albertson from Murray State University and Cole Floyd & Carter McNeil from Bethel University.  Edging out the team from Murray State by just over nine pounds, Floyd & McNeil claimed the winning prize of $2,000.
  • Huff was back in the news after winning the Toyota Series at Toledo Bend Reservoir in Many, Louisiana in February. The title came on the heels of Huff and Bethel teammate winning the Bassmaster College Series event at Toledo Bend a week before.
  • Bethel finished 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the FLW in late February. That was the first time ever in FLW history that one program finished in the top three positions.
  • Cody Huff Finished in the Top Twenty Five in the world later in March in Birmingham in the world's biggest Bass Fishing event, The Bassmasters Classic.

Chappell was joined by Mason who accepted the award and expressed her thoughts about the season.

Chappell stated, "We are very happy for Coach Mason. He has done a fantastic job and continues to keep Bethel at the forefront in collegiate fishing. It is remarkable what this program has done and continues to do. It is an honor to present him this award."
