2017 Ranger Aluminum Cup

Congratulations to Brad Kell and John Morris for winning the 2017 Ranger Aluminum Cup

USA Bassin anglers Brad Kell and John Morris won the 2017 Ranger Aluminum Cup hosted on Kentucky Lake with a two-day total weight of 51.58 pounds. Their two-day total sets a new record and beats the previous record (45.51 pounds) set by Shawn Penn / Steve Freeman by more than 6 pounds.

Heavy currents and nearly perfect pre-front weather conditions made the two-day event a generous one in the case of bites yet unforgiving in the sense of boating conditions. However, the team of Kell and Morris were able to capitalize on it all to find the right bites – and plenty of them – to clinch the win.

The two sacked up their 27.69- and 23.89-pound limits on a handful of banks in 4 to 8 feet of water.

“Our biggest five fish over the course of the two days came off one spot, and it was by pure chance that we found it,” said Kell. “On day one, we were fishing a hole we discovered in practice, and I was catching them nearly every cast. Then a boat pulled up on us, so I just let the current take us down the bank, and we began to catch five pounder after five pounder.”

The key to this newfound productive bank along with other areas that they targeted was the presence of mass amounts of spawning shad.

“The shad were key,” said Morris. “If there were not shad there, it was not worth anything.”

To entice the actively feeding bass, both anglers threw a white Babe swimbait made by 3F Fishing For Five – occasionally with a chartreuse dip tail.

Overall, Kell and Morris entered the tournament with a winning attitude, but say that the chance finding of their most productive spot is what truly sealed the deal. For their efforts, the two walked away with a Ranger RT 188 Powered by a 90 HP Mercury.
