Smith Mountain Lake Regional

Smith Mountain Lake Regional

Friday, September 15, 2017

The Smith Mountain Lake Regional was held out of the Oak Grove Ramp on September 10th. The event featured 26 teams vying for the guaranteed $1,000 first place prize. Fishing was tough for many of the teams, with several zeros and many unfilled limits.

Figuring out the puzzle was Bryan Humphreys and Maurice Oakes, who weighed in a 16.81lb limit and won the event by over five pounds. "We gambled and went deep and it paid off. It seemed like everyone else was fishing shallow for bass feeding on shad," said Oakes. The team knew it was a gamble and they would likely be heroes or zeroes with the strategy, but it worked.

The team caught approximately ten keepers throughout the day. "We had a limit by 9:00 and then it really slowed down. Our practice was slow, but we knew the best chance to catch big ones was out deep," he said.

The team focused their efforts in 20-feet of water and used both jigs and soft plastics to claim the win. Congrats Bryan and Maurice!
