Latest News West Virginia Regional![]() Tuesday, October 08, 2013 24 teams took to Sutton Lake on September 29th for the West Virginia Regional. Sutton Lake is known as a lake full of keeper sized fish, but the fishing proved to be more difficult than normal due to the water levels and fact that the bass had not yet moved into their Fall patterns. Tournament Director Tim Whaples also fished the event and said that the water levels were higher than normal due to the next lake being pulled down below normal levels. Whaples fished the event and was able to find fish by using a carolina rigged lizard and baby brush hog, a technique used by several other teams. The lake is home to all three major species of bass: largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass. "I would say that about 70% of the fish weighed in were largemouth with 20% spotted bass and the other 10% weighed in were smallmouth," said Whaples. First Place was John Robinson and Harold Taylor who had a limit weighing 8.91lbs and also had the big bass of the tournament, a 2.73lb fish. For the win, the team won over $1200 and also took home $240 for their big bass prize. Second Place was Larry Robinson and Kirby Ratliff who had a limit weighing 6.15lbs. They brought home over $800 for their finish. Third Place was Wes Carr and Kemp Phillips with a limit weighing 5.97lbs. The team fished close to the ramp and caught between 10-15 keepers throughout the day on a carolina rigged watermelon/red Zoom baby brush hog. "We caught them throughout the day and it was a grind to catch them," said the team. For their efforts, the team brought home over $400. The fourth place team of Steven Dinkler and Rick Brown narrowly missed both the 3rd Place check and big bass prize. Their 2.72lb bass was .01 less than the big bass winner and .15lbs from the third place prize. Here are the top five finishers:
