It is time for some of the best fishing

It is time for some of the best fishing

Thursday, November 08, 2007

Fall is definitely in the air in the Midwest, bringing with it cooler air and water temps.  But there is still some great bass fishing before the freeze.   Once turnover occurs, bass begin to feed – getting ready for the winter months.  And heavy feeding means great fishing action!  Now is the time to target creek mouths and work back from there.  The fish are beginning to find there way to the wintering holes, seeking out the best oxygen and forage sources.
The first things you need to know when setting out for Fall fishing is:
        1. Knowing the temperature of the water.
        2. Knowing the natural forage of that certain body of water.
        3. Knowing areas where deep water is close to shallow water.
        4. Knowing where aquatic plant life is located. (If any)

The reasons for the above are that;  the cooler temperature will make the bass more active, which in turn will increase the digestive system making the bass feed more often. Bass will eat natural forage in any given body of water, so color patterns and size of baits are to replicate the natural forage. Bass will normally be in areas where shallow water areas are close to deep water areas for a "Comfort Zone". For example, if you have shallow water areas that hold bass, and it is close to deeper water and a weather front (whether it be a cold or warm front) moves in, it will affect the shallow water. The temperature will change much faster in the shallows than in the deep water. As I said before, almost any artificial bait pattern will work during the Fall period.

However, the following are some of the more preferred baits to use for Fall Fishing:
        1. Lipless Crank baits (Rat-L-Traps, Bill Dance suspending White Crank baits, Etc.....)
        2. Top Water Baits (Pop-R’s, Floating Minnows, and Double bladed buzz baits)
        3. Plastics (10’’ or 7’’ Power Bait Worms also don’t forget about lizards to)
        4. Spinner Baits (Slow rolling and make sure you hit them against all the stumps)
        5. ¼ oz Jigs to 3/8 oz Jigs with a Paca Chunk as a trailer (Net Bait)
        6. Crank baits (Deep divers working on the downward slops or drops)
