“Pro Angler’s
Recommend BioEdge Scents” By
                                                                          Billy "Hawkeye" Decoteau

Maine’s BioEdge fishing attractant has once again came on board as an Official 2011 USA Bassin Classic Sponsor! All Classic Contenders competing on Kentucky Lake would be wise to adhere to the following advice from Paducah, Kentucky’s Mark Menendez and fellow Bassmaster Elite Angler James Niggemeyer! Especially, if the Classic’s 1st Place Nitro Z-8 prize package is their ultimate goal!

In the world of professional bass angling the difference of one ounce or one point in the overall standing can literally mean the difference in a professional bass anglers career. Paducah, Kentucky’s Bassmaster Elite Pro Angler Mark Menendez knows better than most pro anglers the anxiety this minute difference can make.

“Several times I missed qualifying for the Bassmaster Classic as the first man out,” recalls Menendez. “Missing the Bassmaster Classic on Louisiana’s Red River in 2009 was devastating to say the least! However, it also made me dig deeper into my repertoire of techniques, on the water presentations, and my ability to stay in tune with the underwater aquatic world of the Black Bass.”

Menendez’s background as a Fisheries Biologist, allows him to dissect not only the seasonal transitional movement of his quarry, the Black Bass, but also the forage base available within each body of water he competes on. Researching the natural forage living within a specific body of water, and then applying your presentations realistically so that they resemble this forage in the areas they occupy is only the first step to enticing a bass to eat your bait!

“Confidence is what pumps the adrenaline of a Champion”, echoes Mark Menendez. Adding, “Confidence in your tackle, your choice of baits and the areas you work your baits, is obviously very important. However, when I factor in the application of BioEdge scent to my bait my confidence is boosted! BioEdge is 100% ALL NATURAL made from the exact forage base I am imitating. If my bait presentation represents a Crayfish, with BioEdge Crayfish scent it also smells like a Crayfish! BioEdge gives me both the ‘Confidence and Knowledge’ to focus more on how to catch the next bass and not worry about whether or not I’ll catch the first bass.”

James Niggemeyer of Van, Texas, a guide on Lake Fork and Professional Bassmaster Elite Angler is quick to agree with Menendez. “Anglers may not think the application of BioEdge scent can make that much of a difference, but it can and it has! I have no doubt in my mind that during the Lay Lake Classic, my applying BioEdge Crayfish scent semi-solid attractant gave me the confidence the spotted bass in my area stopped mouthing my bait and began eating it!”

“I believe the bass through their olfactory glands registered my artificial bait as real and that’s the only reason I had 5-bites and caught all 5-bass,” Claims Niggemeyer, who finished 18th in the 40th Bassmaster Classic.

It has been said; a bait is only as good as the angler making the presentation. “An enormous amount of research and development goes into the design of the baits utilized by bass anglers. Every effort is taken to make baits especially hard baits such as swimbaits, jerkbaits and crankbaits move throughout the water column, as naturally as possible ….…….. So the addition of BioEdge scent seems only logical! I want my baits to look, perform and SMELL like the real thing,” adamantly explains James Niggemeyer. “BioEdge Fishing Products is the only scent available to bass anglers that allows me to do this!!!”

Keying in on a bass’s sense of forage detection is paramount to success! Utilizing sight, as found in most clear water situations, it’s inner ear detecting sound, as echoed throughout the water column, a bass’s lateral line is like a radar screen detecting every movement from minute vibrations of crayfish crawling along the bottom to huge schools of shad thrashing on the surface, and then there is the Olfactory Gland, wherein a bass’s sense of smell signals a red light of caution or a green light for dinner.

“Scientific research has established and proven a bass’s olfactory gland can detect scent in parts per million, be it a positive scent such as forage or a negative scent such as that of a human,” instructs Mark Menendez, an apt student in the world of fishery biology.

Menendez continues, “As water clarity diminishes a bass will then focus on its sense of hearing (Inner ear), feeling movement (Lateral Line) and its sense of smell (Olfactory gland). Consider a cold front situation where as the baitfish are just suspended impelling very little movement (Also, found in cold water situations), and a bass has to turn to it’s strongest sense for survival…. smell. In this situation it’s imperative for bass angler’s to mask their artificial baits with BioEdge scent!”

Why BioEdge Scent? “Besides the fact that BioEdge utilizes only 100% ALL NATURAL forage, it is their manufacturing process wherein they capture and preserve the biological ingredients significant to each species of forage,” says Mark Menendez.

According to Menendez BioEdge captures the complex and delicate mixture of natural forage oils, enzymes and pheromones, specific to each forage, while preserving these via a unique cold extraction process. This cold extraction process in turn eliminates the loss of important forage scent ingredients found in a cooking process and watered down finish scent products!

“As a guide on Lake Fork one of the things I look for besides birds flocking to the surface gorging shad baitfish, is an actual baitfish oil slick floating on the water,” informs Texas guide James Niggemeyer. “You will not always find this, however when you do it signals huge schools of baitfish are in that area and the bass are close by, usually preparing to start a feeding frenzy.”

“This baitfish oil slick is caused by the natural release of body oils, amino acids and other baitfish substances. Traveling through the water column these natural baitfish oil droplets continually release a soluble baitfish scent all the way to the surface. All of which are detected through the black bass’s olfactory glands,” reveals Menendez. “BioEdge scents actually impart this identical natural release of forage body oils, allowing an anglers bait to be detected throughout the entire water column.” Adding, “As a professional bass angler where every bite is important, the mere application of BioEdge scent to my artificial bait expands my strike zone!”

BioEdge Scent is available in two forms, a liquid potion and a semi-solid wand. (Similar to a chap-stick applicator.) “I have to say that I utilize the BioEdge Wand approximately 75% of the time,” says James Niggemeyer. “What excites me about the Wand applicator is the fact I can control the amount of BioEdge scent I apply to my bait, as well as the location.”

For example, Niggemeyer will at times apply his BioEdge scent only on one side of his crankbait, or his top water bait. “When I’m working a hollow body frog across vegetation, smearing the BioEdge Frog scent from a Wand allows me to really slick it up on the belly of my frog. Now I not only have a frog bait that will work more naturally as it slithers across and through the vegetation, it also emits a real 100% natural frog scent.”

Mark Menendez concurs, “Without a doubt the BioEdge Wand is by far the most effortless and mess free scent applicator available. Besides the fact that the Wand semi-solid BioEdge scent last longer on my baits it also enhances my baits performance.” Mark Menendez instructs anglers to spread BioEdge scent in a mimicking forage scent, such as Herring or Smelt, covering every part of their crankbait. “And, this includes the hooks, bill and at least a foot of your line. You will be pleasantly surprise as to your baits performance, this application will reduce drag allowing your bait to dive deeper faster.”

James Niggemeyer adds, “Mark is right on target with his recommendation, the bass will also hold onto your bait longer. One additional factor often overlooked by anglers, especially with larger bass is a bass’s ability to mouth your bait so hard that you cannot get a hook set! More often than not these big largemouth’s will get into view open their mouths and swim away! However, by following Mark’s advice your crankbait in now lubricated completely, thus allowing your BioEdge coated bait to slide and aid you in setting the hook.”

As for the BioEdge liquid Potion, these Bassmaster Elite Anglers offer anglers some bass catching advice. “All of my skirted lures, jigs, spinnerbaits, topwater trailers, etc as well as all of my plastic baits receive an application of BioEdge liquid Potion, before and during my lure presentation. I especially soak my skirted jigs band with BioEdge Crayfish scent as this band holds the scent and ensures me a quality hookset,” says Menendez.

Lake Fork guide James Niggemeyer likes to marinate his plastic baits with BioEdge scents. “I will wipe dry some of my plastic baits, place them in a plastic zip-lock bag and soak them with BioEdge scent overnight. This process will allow my plastics to absorb my BioEdge scent, the scent application not only will last longer, but when flipping my baits in grass beds they will not get hung up allowing complete coverage top to bottom of the weedy water column,” suggest Niggemeyer. “It is especially helpful when guiding my clients for Lake Fork Lunkers!”

Menendez and Niggemeyer are quick to point out that the application of BioEdge 100% ALL NATURAL scent is another tool aiding them in their presentations and techniques. “The introduction of BioEdge Freshwater Shad, Trout, Sunfish, Leach, Sucker and Gobie scents in May of 2010, will only enhance the already extensive forage choices available,” says Mark Menendez. Both Menendez and Niggemeyer are overly excited with the new BioEdge Shad and Sunfish formula. “Shad or a form of Shad can be found in just about every body of water across the United States, especially on the remaining bodies of water with the Bassmaster Elite Series,” says James Niggemeyer. “As are Sunfish,” adds Menendez.

If you want to expand your basin ability, work your baits to their fullest potential, and increase the odds in your favor for enticing bass to eat your baits, then follow the advice of Bassmaster Elite Anglers Mark Menendez and James Niggemeyer. “Maximize your angling potential, appeal to a Bass’s sense of smell by applying BioEdge 100% ALL Natural Scents!”
