Not just a topwater lure

"Nemire lures Spoon Buzz"
At the USA Bassin Classic last year, I was fortunate enough to win one of the many door prizes our sponsors donate. My winnings were a packet of lures, stickers and patches from Nemire Lures. Many times fishing tournaments, especially regional and classic tournament s we receive free lures or lucky enough to win some as I did.  Some we try and some we never remove out of the package but keep in our mass collection of beloved tackle.
My packet of goodies remained in the boat week s after the Classic until one day I was prefishing and decided to look for something completely different.   In middle of June in Southern Indiana bass are mainly in a post spawn pattern and some good fish can be taken on top water early. When I dumped out the packet in the boat floor, white spoon bait with a buzz blade in front of it caught my eye. Little did I know it would become one of my favorite search baits in my tackle box. The fish that day seemed to be hitting top water baits early and late.  However, the bite in the afternoon was not as aggressive as the morning bite.  If you got bit in an area with the Spoon Buzz in the afternoon, you could assure yourself other bass was in the same area.
I decided to go again the next morning and the sun was about half way up the tree line when I began throwing the Spoon Buzz. I was fishing for nearly 30 minutes without a strike when my cell phone rang just after a cast. The time it took for me to pull the phone out and answer the phone was enough time for my bait to fall a bit deeper.  Talking on the phone and retrieving slow never allowing the bait to break the surface is when I caught a good fish. After I landed the fish I was eager to end my call and try the pattern again without the phone in my ear. Throughout the day I was able catch fish at different depths. Later in the year I removed the Skirt Strap Trailer and fished at even deeper depths.
In an interview with Eddyville Kentucky pro Chris Gable he spoke very highly of the Spin Buzz. Chris mentioned how the Spin Buzz was a lure that you could get extremely long cast from. Using a 7’10” rod and a Spin Buzz would allow him to reach fish that could not be fished with normal buzz type baits. When speaking to Chris you could sense his excitement for the lures. Gable was also very fond of Nemire’s Red Ripper the flagship lure of the Nemire line. The Kentucky pro mentioned how the red ripper when paused, would fall with action that mimicked a dying shad, unlike the Chatter bait that fell straight down with no action. Gable is formerly from Heneryville Indiana and has fished many of our local lakes in southern Indiana. Chris said he felt Nemire Lures were the perfect fit for all southern Indiana Lakes.
When I spoke with Al Lundstrom owner of Nemire lures and told him my story he suggested using  split shot a 6-10 inches above the buzz bait. He reminded me that Neimere’s interchangeable skirts allows you to create a color or “Match the Hatch” to simulate the local baitfish. He went on to say, that this would have a different presentation and most strikes would occur on the fall. A rattle Neimire calls a Sonic Sound Chamber produces a sound that I think fish have not heard before and creates amazing reaction strikes. The Spoon Buzz works very well on top of the water as well. I prefer the longer Skirt Strap and found a trailer hook helps hook-ups on short strikes.
Kentucky Lake has been known to produce big bass on spoon type baits. With the Classic being held again on Kentucky Lake I am excited to see what the lures will produce. During the winter many of us shop the lures we will purchase for the next season. I strongly encourage Bassin anglers check out Neimire Lures when you make out your winter list of purchases. The day after Thanksgiving known to Christmas shoppers as “Black Friday” Neimire is offering a 30% discount on all online orders.  See http://nemirelures.com  on November 27th for full details.
